Abstract: Matchsticklike, Au-decorated, CdSe-seeded CdS nanorods are demonstrated as being able to retain a significant amount of their original fluorescence properties, exhibiting quantum yields of up to 23%. A proof-of-concept type application of these fluorescent metal-tipped semiconductor nanorods is given, exploiting the different chemical affinities of the metal and semiconductor moieties to facilitate directed assembly on a chemically patterned surface.
