Title: | I need to dress better! : relating concerns with appearance to places. | Authors: | Chia, Wan Ping. | Keywords: | DRNTU::Social sciences | Issue Date: | 2010 | Abstract: | This paper seeks to explain NTU undergraduates’ fluctuating levels of concern for their appearance in everyday life through the concept of the “strangeness” of places. The differences in concerns are examined by looking at the elaborateness of rituals that respondents do after waking up, while the concept of the “strange” is drawn upon Georg Simmel’s concept of the “stranger”. Fourteen NTU undergraduates of Chinese ethnicity were interviewed. Findings show that generally, the “stranger” a place is to the respondents, the more concerned they will be with their appearance. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10356/22657 | Schools: | School of Humanities and Social Sciences | Rights: | Nanyang Technological University | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
