Title: | Growth and functionalization of magnetic nanowires and magnetic nanotubes | Authors: | Waluyan, Septian Budi | Keywords: | DRNTU::Engineering::Materials::Nanostructured materials | Issue Date: | 2010 | Abstract: | In this work, I have successfully fabricated gold nanowires, gold nanotubes, and multilayer nanowires, i.e. Ni-Au multilayer nanowires and Ni/Au/Ni nanowires by template-assisted pulsed electrodeposition method. The template used is the commercially available Anodisc Alumina Oxide (AAO) membrane with the diameter of 250-300 nm. The AAO is then evaporated by the metal for the nanowires fabrication. For the nanotubes fabrication, the AAO is sputtered instead. The diameter of the nanowires fabricated is about 250-300 nm. The length of the nanowires depends on the deposition time. The formation of the nanotubes is achieved in a specific time. If the deposition time is longer beyond the specific time, the nanowires will be formed instead of nanotubes. The characterization involves Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) which confirms the arrays of the nanowires and nanotubes formed. From the SEM characterization, the clear segmentation is also observed for the multilayer nanowires. The gold segment is brighter compared the the nickel. In the other hand, the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) characterization confirms the materials of the nanowires fabricated. From the peaks observed, gold is confirmed to have been fabricated. Alternating Gradient Force Magnetometer (AGFM) is used to characterize the magnetic properties of nanowires. The Ni/Au multilayer nanowires are characterized using the AGFM. The coercivity is 131 Oe. The released gold nanowires are then functionalized with the thiol-modified single stranded DNA. The functionalization method uses the idea of gold nanoparticles functionalization method. The partial functionalization is achieved and some parts of the gold nanowires can be attached by the thiol-modified DNA. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10356/40742 | Schools: | School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
