In the recent years, there has been a shift in customers’ attention towards green practices. As a result, industry players demand for green vessel designs. International Maritime Organisation has developed the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) to measure the carbon dioxide emissions of a vessel. However, no study has been made to develop a framework to benchmark green vessels qualitatively. This paper aims to develop a benchmarking framework to complement EEDI to address this issue. The framework aims to rate the vessel and includes elements of improvements to achieve both economic and environmental superiority. Finite green practices available in the market were explored. Five main areas of green design, namely hull form optimisation, energy saving devices, structural optimisation, machinery technology and proper documentation, formed the backbone of the framework with specific green measures and practices for each area listed. Implementation of green practices would lower the EEDI of a vessel. This framework was sent to industry experts for comments and feedbacks.
