Issue Date: | 2015 | Abstract: | Climate change is one of the major environmental challenges of our time. It is a global challenge which requires concerted international action. The onus is also on individual countries to find appropriate measures to tackle the problem. By leveraging on innovative ideas and technologies in energy efficiency and conservation, we can help to address climate change and save significant sums of money in the long run, without any loss in living comfort. It is a practical and cost-effective means of mitigating carbon dioxide emissions while sustaining economic development. Improving energy efficiency is the fastest, the most sustainable and the cheapest way to reduce energy consumption, lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and enhance energy security. The energy saving potential in industries and utilities is enormous. Nearly 70 percent of all electrical energy consumed by industry is used by the millions of electrical motors installed worldwide. Flexible loads with variable speed applications can be made more efficient if power converters based electrical drives are used. Industries like Siemens, Schneider, Rockwell, Danfoss and many others have come up with converter designs to optimize the solution for a given application. The promise and potential of saving in yearly kWh is so lucrative that it has started a whole new area of research which is dedicated to components and new devices that make these power converters more and more efficient. Through extensive survey and quality evaluations it is concluded that a Synchronous Reluctance Motor-Drive in which the motor is tuned to the power electronics converter, can help lower energy use. This can be achieved by reducing power consumption and losses, improving productivity or through better management of equipment. In this report, a survey of the existing motor-drives solution has been carried out. To limit the scope of this work, only industrial drives have been considered because these form the largest percentage of drives sold globally and around the tropical belt that includes Singapore. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/10356/64679 | Schools: | School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering | Rights: | Nanyang Technological University | Fulltext Permission: | restricted | Fulltext Availability: | With Fulltext |
