Althaf Marsoof is an Associate Professor at the Division of Business Law of Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He currently serves as the Deputy Head of the Business Law Division and as a Fellow of NTU’s Renaissance Engineering Programme. Althaf holds a BSc in information technology from Curtin University, an LLM from the University of Cambridge and an MPhil from the University of Queensland. Prior to joining NTU in 2017, he was awarded a PhD from the Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London. His doctoral thesis focused on the liability of internet intermediaries for trademark infringements. This research, which was fully funded by the Dickson Poon PhD Scholarship, was the basis for his book titled ‘Internet Intermediaries and Trade Mark Rights’, published by Routledge in 2019. His book was subsequently cited in the Opinion of the Advocate General of the European Court of Justice in Joined Cases C‑148/21 and C‑184/21, Christian Louboutin v Amazon Europe Core Sàrl and others, ECLI:EU:C:2022:422 (Opinion of AG Szpunar).

Althaf has won several awards at NTU. In 2018, he was awarded the John Cheung Endowment Social Media Award in recognition of his use of social media platforms to enhance teaching. In 2020, he received the NBS Research Award for the Division of Business Law. In 2021, he received the REP Teacher of the Year Award.

Althaf specializes in intellectual property law (with a focus on trademarks, copyright and third-world perspectives) and technology law. He has published his research in reputable law journals, including the International Journal of Law & Information Technology, International Review of Intellectual Property & Competition Law, Intellectual Property Quarterly, and the European Intellectual Property Review.

Althaf is qualified to practise law in Sri Lanka. Before transitioning into academia, he served the Government of Sri Lanka as a State Counsel attached to the Attorney General’s Department.
