Professor Lam Khin Yong oversees and drives industry partnerships in Nanyang Technological University Singapore as its first Vice President (Industry). Previously, as Senior Vice President (Research) (2014 – 2022), he guides NTU’s university-wide research and its implementation.

In his role as NTU’s Senior Vice President (Research) and currently as Vice President (Industry), he plays a strategic role in growing NTU’s link to industry through the various Corporate and Joint Labs including HP Inc., Rolls-Royce, Continental, Singtel, GlobalFoundries, and others.

Prof Lam has held many research/academic leadership appointments at the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Agency for Science Technology and Research (A*STAR) and NTU. Before joining NTU, he was the Founding Director of the NUS Centre for Computational Mechanics and the NUS-MINDEF Underwater Shock Laboratory, Programme Director of the IHPC-MINDEF High Performance Computing Centre, Founding Executive Director of the Institute of High Performance Computing and Founding Executive Director of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) Graduate Academy. He is the Co-Chair for the Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre Steering Board.

As a scholar and researcher, Professor Lam has research output of over 300 papers in international refereed journals with a citation count of over 12,000 and H-index of 58. His research area is mainly in computational mechanics. He is also a fellow of the Academy of Engineering Singapore.

Professor Lam is the recipient of many prestigious accolades. He was also awarded the French Legion of Honour (Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur) in 2017 in recognition of his contributions in nurturing academic and industry collaborations for NTU that have strengthened bilateral relations between France and Singapore. Other accolades include the Shandong University Honorary Professorship, the South China University of Technology Honorary Professorship and the University of Science and Technology of China Guest Professorship.

In 2018, he received the prestigious Singapore President’s Science and Technology Medal which is awarded to outstanding individuals who have made a distinguished contribution to the development of Singapore through the promotion and management of R&D. He had also received the Singapore Distinguished Service Award from the National Supercomputing Centre Singapore (NSCC Singapore) for his long-term service and contribution to High Performance Computing. He was also the first academic to lead a research team which was awarded the National Defence Technology Prize.

He chairs various steering and governance committees which include the HP-NTU Corporate Lab Governing Board, the Rolls-Royce@NTU Corporate Lab Governing Board as well as the SCALE@NTU Governing Board (Singtel). He is also the Chairman of the China-Singapore International Joint Research Institute at Guangzhou Knowledge City and an Authority Member of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), among others.

He obtained his BSc with First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London and his Master’s and PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also attended the Advanced Management Programme at the Harvard Business School.
