Michelle Phang is Senior Lecturer in Accounting and serves as Assistant Dean (Undergraduate) at Nanyang Business School. Prior to joining academia, she was an Accountant at Akzo Nobel (Atlanta) and Asia Pacific Regional Manager at International Development Research Council (Atlanta). She is a member of CPA Australia.

Michelle has more than 25 years of teaching experience in undergraduate and postgraduate programs. She was Lecturer in Accounting (with tenure) at Deakin University (Melbourne) before joining Nanyang Technological University. Her primary teaching areas include cost accounting, managerial accounting, and strategic management accounting.

Michelle was the recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award and also nominated for the Teacher of the Year Award in 2020 by Nanyang Business School. She received the McGraw-Hill Education Excellence Award in 2015 and nominated for the Pearson Innovation in Accounting Education Award in 2018, and the John Cheung Endowment Award for Social Media in 2021 due to her efforts in using educational technology to enhance students’ learning experience.
Michelle Phang’s research interests include investigating impacts of management control systems within risk management context, examining roles of knowledge sharing in competency development, and exploring the relationship between digital dexterity, learning experience and academic performance.

Michelle was the recipient of the Best Paper Award (Education) at the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand Conference in 2011. Her research projects also received the MIA Articles of Merit Award from the Malaysia Institute of Accountants in 2010, and the Highly Commended Paper Award from the Emerald Literati Network Award for Excellence in 2012.

Under Michelle’s supervision, her URECA (Undergraduate Research Experience on Campus) students received the Discovery URECA Poster Competition - First Prize in Finance, Business & Operation in 2018 and URECA Undergraduate Research Excellence Award in 2020.
