Jie Zhang's research is in the general area of Artificial Intelligence and Multi-Agent Systems, and has been focused on trust management in open, large, dynamic and uncertain environments where users represented by software agents may be deceptive. In particular, he has been addressing the challenging robustness issue in trust management where trust systems become the target of attacks. He has also focused on designing tailored trust systems for emerging application domains (e.g. e-commerce, recommender systems, networking, etc.) to meet specific requirements imposed by the special characteristics of those different application domains. Another major direction of his research is in the design of multi-agent systems and mechanisms that create incentives for agents to behave honestly.
