Since 1978, Dr. Tan has been involved in coaching of badminton, judo, track & field in the secondary schools and in a junior college in Singapore. He was also a national coach in high jumping (1993-1994). He started his teaching career in St Joseph's Institution (Singapore) back in 1984. In 1991, when the School of Physical Education was founded, he joined the school as a senior tutor.
His previous research included: The comparison of the accuracy and precision of video and 16 mm cinefilm digitising system, Evaluation of the Apex Target video digitisation system, Video analysis of the curved approach in high jumping and The mechanics of the curved approach in high jumping. Currently, Dr. Tan is investigating the accuracy and precision of the Peak 'Pan and tilt' video analysis system. He is the coordinator for the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (Physical Education) programme.
