Goh Yeng Seng is Professor of Linguistics and Language Education in the Office of Education Research at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. He was the Head of Asian Languages and Cultures Academic Group from 2006 to 2014. He received his B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature from National Taiwan University and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from SOAS, University of London.
He made significant contributions to the bilingual education system in Singapore when he was appointed as Academic Advisor to the Ministry of Education, Singapore in 2001 to pioneer a novel experiment of Bilingual Approach to Teaching Chinese. In recognition of his pioneering work in this field, he was further appointed as a member of the Mother Tongue Language Review Committee (2010), Chinese Language Review Committee (2010), and the Mother Tongue Languages Review Steering Committee (2011-14) to provide his academic input and advice to the Ministry of Education, Singapore.
His scholarly book from Cambridge University Press, Teaching Chinese as an International Language, offers the first in-depth English language analysis of the spread of global Chinese and the teaching of Chinese as an international language to English-speaking learners from a Singapore perspective. He has also published several research articles in leading international journals and peer-refereed book chapters by established publishers from UK, USA, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Germany, The Netherlands, Japan and Singapore.
He held a number of external professional appointments. He was appointed as Visiting Professor to Harvard University, East China Normal University, Huaqiao University, Southwest University of Science and Technology, Nanning Normal University, Qiqihar Medical University and Jilin Huaqiao University of Foreign Languages. He was also appointed as National High-end Foreign Expert, PRC to Shanghai International Studies University, Tongji University and Qinghai Nationalities University.
A number of academic institutions also appointed him as External Programme Evaluator, such as The University of Hong Kong, The Education University of Hong Kong, Singapore University of Social Sciences and University of Stellenbosh, Academic Advisor, such as Sun Yat-sen University, Nanjing University, People’s Association, Singapore and Singapore Telecommunications, and Higher Degree External Examiner, such as the National University of Singapore, Deakin University, University of Malaya and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.
He was appointed as executive committee member of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching and Asia-Pacific Consortium on Teaching Chinese as an International Language. He also sat on the editorial committees of a number of leading journals, including Journal of International Chinese Teaching and Research, Beijing Language & Culture University, International Chinese Language Education, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Journal of Chinese Language Studies, Peking University, Journal of National Taiwan Normal University, Research on Chinese Language and Chinese Language Teaching, J. F. Oberlin University, Journal of Chinese Language Teaching and Research, Ji’nan University.
