Assoc Prof Peter Teo has been with the English Language and Literature department at NIE since 1997. Having begun his career as a language teacher in school and now a teacher educator at NIE, he has had the privilege to view education from both the practice and theory perspectives. Dr Teo received his Master in Applied Linguistics from Macquarie University, Australia and his Ph.D. from Lancaster University, U.K.. His main research interests lie at the intersection of (critical) discourse studies and language education. He has published widely in international peer-reviewed journals including Discourse and Society, Discourse and Communication, Journal of Pragmatics, Language and Education, and Teaching and Teacher Education. In addition, he has co-edited four books on language teaching and discourse analysis published by Pearson-Longman and McGraw-Hill. He has close to 100 publications in total, including journal articles, books and book chapters, and conference papers. Dr Teo has taught a wide range of courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as pre-service and in-service teacher education courses over the years. He received commendation awards for his teaching in 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2023. In addition, he was also awarded the Koh Boon Hwee Scholars' Award (Honoured Faculty) in 2022. Dr Teo has contributed in many ways to the academic community and education fraternity through leadership in his department, consultancy work with universities, and committee work with the MOE and SEAB. He was awarded the National Day Long Service Medal in 2020.
Dr Teo's research straddles two main strands of applied linguistics. The first is Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), which was based on and grew out of his graduate research. Key publications focusing on the discourse analysis of public media such as newspapers, campaigns, posters and speeches include journal articles in Discourse and Society, Critical Discourse Studies, Visual Communication, Discourse & Communication, and Journal of Language and Politics. One of his articles published in Discourse and Society, 'Racism in the News: A Critical Discourse Analysis of News Reporting in two Australian Newspapers', has attracted 1100 citations as of December 2024.
The second strand of his research relates to his work in language education and teacher education. A key area of research, which was based on a funded research project, examines dialogic teaching in the language classroom. Key publications have appeared in Teaching and Teacher Education, Language and Education, and Learning, Culture and Social Interaction.
Dr Teo continues to work and co-publish with his graduate students within and across these two strands of applied linguistics. Some of this work have appeared in journals including Discourse & Communication, Journal of Pragmatics, Educational Theory and Philosophy, Educational Review, Journalism Practice, Social Semiotics, and Higher Education.
