Charlene Rajendran has taught theatre at the National Institute of Education since June 2001. She is a Malaysian theatre educator, practitioner, writer and dramaturg, particularly interested in issues of culture and identity in contemporary Southeast Asian society. She researches issues of contemporary performance, cultural difference, pedagogies of play, and spaces of dialogue and empathy. She has published in a range of sites including journals such as The Drama Review, Asian Theatre Journal and Theatre, Dance and Performance Training. Most recently she was Dramaturg for The Necessary Stage's Gitanjali: I feel the earth move (2014) and ArtsWok and Drama Box's Both Sides Now (2014). In January 2015, she was Convenor for an international conference in Kuala Lumpur entitled Unfinished Business: Krishen Jit's Performance Practice and Contemporary Malaysian Theatre produced by Five Arts Centre.
