Assoc Prof Wang Qiyun

Dr. Wang Qiyun is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Learning Sciences and Assessment (LSA) at National Institute of Education (NIE), NTU. He also serves as Co-Director of the Centre for Research and Development in Learning (CRADLE), NTU. He obtained his PhD from the University of Twente, the Netherlands, in 2001, and his Master’s and Bachelor's degrees from East China Normal University, Shanghai.

His research areas include blended learning, online learner engagement, and the design of technology-enhanced learning environments. He has been actively involved in numerous educational research projects and is currently the Principal Investigator (PI) of two MOE-funded research projects: i) TRF: Enhancing and Monitoring the Emotional Engagement of Students in Synchronous Online Learning (S$293,501, 2025–2028); and ii) ERFP: Promoting and Monitoring the Cognitive Engagement of Online Students in the Blended Synchronous Learning Environment (S$282,000, 2021–2025).

Dr. Wang has published over 50 research articles in SSCI-indexed journals. In January 2025, he published the academic book "Designing Technology-Mediated Learning Environments: Perspectives, Processes, and Applications" (https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-981-96-0680-1. He has supervised two PhD/EdD students to graduation and is currently supervising two more. He serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Research and Practice in Technology Enhanced Learning (RPTEL) and the International Journal of Social Media and Interactive Learning Environments, as well as an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Continuing Engineering and Life-Long Learning. Additionally, he is an editorial board member and reviewer for several international journals and has been a guest editor for over 10 special issues.

Dr. Wang has also taken on leadership roles in numerous international conferences, serving as an executive chair and sub-conference chair. He has also been invited to give keynote speeches at many conferences and seminars. Awards
He has won various international recognitions. Since 2021, he has been ranked a top 2% researcher worldwide by Stanford University and Elsevier. He was identified as #7 most productive educational researcher in Southeast Asia in a study published in the well-recognised journal Educational Review conducted by Barrot (2021). In addition, a first-authored article about using Facebook as a learning management system is a highly cited paper (top 1%) in Web of Knowledge, and two additional papers were among the most downloaded ones reported by Routledge.
