Dr Choong Kok Weng joined the Asian Languages and Cultures Academic Group, NIE as Assistant Professor in July 2005. To better serve his passion in teaching, Dr Choong took up the post of Lecturer in 2011 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer on Jan 2013. He is currently the Programme Leader for the Higher Degree Programme in Chinese Language and Culture division.

Dr Choong taught Chinese language and literature in Nanyang Junior College from 1991 to 2000 and served as Level Head from 1997 to 2000. He was the curriculum specialist and curriculum planning officer (Chinese Language and Literature) with the Curriculum Planning and Development Division of the Ministry of Education from 2001 to 2005.

Dr Choong specializes in the area of Teaching of Listening and Speaking; Teaching of Reading and Writing; Introduction to the Teaching of Chinese Language: Process, Pedagogy and Techniques. He has supervised MA and MEd students and has served as Higher Degree Internal Examiners of the Institute. Besides, he has served as Reviewer for a number of internationally refereed journals.

He was a member of the various Steering Committees at Ministry of Education: Chinese Instructional Materials for Primary Schools (2007-2009); Chinese Language Curriculum for Pre-University (2010); Literature in Chinese Syllabus Review (Secondary) (2011) and General Studies of Chinese Syllabus Review for Pre-University (2016). In addition, he serves as the Educational Consultant of the Chinese Language Programme at schools and professional bodies: the Peoples’ Association Talent Advisory Panel, Peoples’ Association (since 2007) and the Bi-cultural Chinese Programme, Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (since 2010).

He is also a member of the Chinese Language Teachers Association (US), International Association for Chinese Teaching (China) and Executive Committee Member of the Chinese Language Society (Singapore).
