Dr Soo Li Mei, Johannah
Lecturer, National Institute of Education - Natural Sciences & Science Education
Dr. Johannah SOO lectures Food and Consumer Sciences (FCS) in the National Institute of Education at the Nanyang Technological University. Dr Soo earns her Bachelor of Consumer and Applied Science (Honours Class 1) at the University of Otago, New Zealand. She obtained her MEd and PhD from the Nanyang Technological University. She was awarded the Bee Nilson Award (University of Otago) 2002 and the Educational Research Association of Singapore (ERAS) Gold award 2010 for outstanding academic performance; and winner of the Novation Starch Challenge, Asia Pacific in 2000. Her training in psychological assessment and measurement from her Master of Education also brings expertise in attitude scale and questionnaire design.

Johannah has been in the teaching profession for more than 25 years, from secondary to tertiary levels, specialising in the field of behaviour in sustainable consumption, food science education, and nutrition. She has been involved in syllabus reviews and textbook publication for the subject matter. She is an active member (currently the Secretary-General) of the Asian Regional Association of Home Economics and have organised numerous international conferences.

She is experienced with both quantitative and qualitative research methods. In research, Johannah’s interest includes understanding behaviours and attitudes of different segments of the populations and in turn provide pertinent information for curriculum designs and community interventions.
Dr Johannah Soo is currently involved in several research projects: STEM-FCS integrated curriculum; Understanding attitudes and self-efficacy towards health issues, food security and resiliency; Lifeworld study of school children in major cities; and sensory evaluation. She has publications in these areas in academic journals, school textbooks and articles in newspapers. She is currently working on a book about the Lifeworlds of Grade 4 students in Singapore.
