Suhaimi Afandi is Senior Lecturer with the Humanities and Social Studies Education (HSSE) Academic Group, National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University. He received his B.A. in history and political science at the National University of Singapore with honours in history. He was awarded the NIE Overseas Graduate Scholarship and completed his PhD (in History Education) at the UCL Institute of Education, London. Prior to joining NIE, Suhaimi taught history in secondary schools and later, at a junior college. He currently serves as Assistant Dean (Graduate Education by Coursework) in the Office of Graduate Studies and Professional Learning (GPL).
Suhaimi’s research interest is primarily focused on the empirical study of the ways in which history and the past are understood by students. He researches into aspects of disciplinary thinking in history and remains keen on developing a history pedagogy that is responsive to students’ preconceptions and prior understandings. In his capacity as history educator at HSSE, Suhaimi teaches a range of pedagogy courses across all programmes – BA, PGDE and Higher Degrees – and supports teacher professional development through in-service courses and school-based consultancies. He also undertakes research supervision work at both undergraduate (URECA) and graduate (Master and PhD) levels.
Suhaimi is an active member of the history education fraternity. He has served as Vice-President of the History Association of Singapore and is a core team member with the History Subject Chapter at the Academy of Singapore Teachers. He also has sat on numerous MOE syllabus development and curriculum review committees for both upper secondary and A-level history. He is currently the main editor for HSSE Online and serves as paper reviewer for the History Education Research Journal and the International Review of History Education.
