DONG Wei is currently an Assistant Professor at the College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Before joining NTU, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his PhD degree from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2023, and his BEng degree from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) in 2017. Between 2017 and 2018, he worked as Research Assistant at CityU. His research has been recognized by the academic community and appeared in top-tier conferences, such as SIGMOD, S&P, PODS, CCS, VLDB, NeurIPS, and KDD. One of his first-author papers won the Best Paper Award at SIGMOD'22. He also received the 2024 SIGMOD Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award Runner-up and Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award from the Computer Science and Engineering Department at HKUST.
DONG Wei’s research interests include data security and privacy, database theory and algorithms, and machine learning. More precisely, he specializes in differential privacy (DP), a widely accepted standard for privacy-preserving data analytics. His research has primarily addressed challenges in both the database and machine learning fields. In the database field, he worked on private relational databases, while in the machine learning field, he explored private basic statistical estimations, which are fundamental to applying DP in AI. More recently, he has become interested in topics such as private graph mining, private vectorized databases, privacy-preserving federated learning, combining DP with more secure techniques like MPC, and applying DP in bioinformatics.
