I am primarily a field linguist specialising in Gyalrongic languages, a group within the Sino-Tibetan family that is both endangered and morphologically conservative. Language documentation involves diverse research areas, from foundational phonetics to complex sentence structures. Consequently, I engage in nearly all subfields of linguistics and have published widely, with a particular focus on morphophonology, morphosyntax, linguistic typology, and historical linguistics.
Currently, my research centers on proto-language reconstruction, phylolinguistics, and interdisciplinary work in human history. My goal is to integrate traditional historical linguistics more smoothly with innovative computational methods to enable linguistics to engage more effectively with fields like archaeology and anthropology.
Beyond Gyalrongic languages, I have interests in Sinitic languages, Old Chinese, and Kra-Dai languages. Recently, I began fieldwork on Jiamao, an unclassified language in Hainan, China, in significant contact with Kra-Dai and Sinitic languages.
Outside academia, I have a variety of hobbies. I enjoy drawing and painting, both with traditional media and digitally on my tablet. I'm also passionate about football and running; in 2022, I finished third among staff members and won a bronze medal in the Trinity Campus 5K race.
Before joining NTU in 2024, I earned my Ph.D. at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris III in 2017, followed by a five-year postdoctoral career at the Max Planck Institute in Jena and Leipzig, Germany, and a research fellowship with an SFI-IRC Pathway Grant at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
