Asst Prof Heesoo Ha
Assistant Professor, National Institute of Education - Natural Sciences & Science Education
Dr. Heesoo Ha is an Assistant Professor in the Natural Sciences and Science Education (NSSE) Department at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University. She received training to become a biology teacher in her undergraduate course and after earning a teacher certificate, taught high school students biology. She later received her PhD in science education, specializing in biology, from Seoul National University in 2020. After obtaining her PhD, Dr. Ha worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Seoul National University (2020-2024). During this time, she also served as a lecturer, teaching preservice teachers and graduate students in science education at several Korean universities, including Seoul National University, Busan National University of Education, Gyeongin National University of Education, and Kangwon National University.

Dr. Ha’s research primarily focuses on student agency and scientific practice-based instruction in science classrooms. Her early work centred on developing effective teaching strategies for implementing argumentation-based instruction in science classrooms. Through in-depth investigation, she identified student agency as a key in supporting meaningful science learning, leading her to develop instructional methods that enhance student agency and engagement in science learning. She is currently focused on developing biology discipline-based instructions to foster student agency and advancing teacher education methods that empower biology teachers to enact these innovative instructional approaches in their classrooms.
