Gun Kim is an Assistant Professor and Tan Swan Beng Assistant Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He received his B.S. (2009) and M.S. (2011) degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Yonsei University, Seoul, and his M.S. (2016) in Mechanical engineering and Ph.D. (2016) in Civil and Environmental engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, under the supervision of Profs. Kimberly Kurtis and Larry Jacobs. From 2017 to 2020, he was a postdoctoral research associate at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, working with Profs. Jeffrey Moore and King Li. Before joining NTU, he was an Assistant Professor at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea, from 2021 to 2024.

Dr. Kim's research focuses on developing advanced ultrasonic technologies for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of civil infrastructure systems, quantitative imaging, and mechano-chemical activations for target drug release. He also works on developing non-traditional, bio-inspired polymeric materials with unprecedented properties and functionalities to address grand challenges in material and biomedical engineering.

He is a recipient of several awards, including the Outstanding Paper Award (2015) from Materials and Structure (ISSN: 1871-6873), the Early Career Investigator Grant from the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the Cancer Center at Illinois (CCIL) Research Grant from the UIUC, and the Outstanding Young Researcher Grant from the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF). With six patents, he published more than 30 first-authored peer-reviewed journal articles, including recent publications in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Science (PNAS, 2019 and 2022) and the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS, 2022).
