Title: Of haunted spaces: cinema, heterotopias, and China’s hyperurbanization
Authors: Raidel, Ella
Abstract: As amalgams of the different spatial logics of other places, reassembled by globalization and the fantasies of real estate development, cities today are becoming what Michel Foucault has termed heterotopias. Assemblies of ruins, theme parks, entirely copied towns, simulacra, business districts on a globalized template, reconstructed historic districts, settlements, and ghost towns are finding a new expression in the contemporary world. Nowhere is this more visible recently than in China, and in areas coming under China’s developmental influence. Copied cities, ghost cities and large scale Chinese investments in Africa are heterotopias because they contain the idea of accumulating different times, cultures, and countries within one place, just as a theme park contains all these different place experiences in a bounded zone outside of its own time and culture.
Ella Raidel has explored these phenomena through film and cinematic virtual reality, and this artist’s book reviews and reflects on the last two decades of her award-winning work. In Ella Raidel’s films urbanism and architecture, theory, politics, social change and image production are intertextually presented, and open a discursive space for investigation and commentary. This book will be interesting for art and film practitioners, and students of architecture, film, urbanization, and infrastructure, especially those who see cinema as a way of exploring these subjects.2023-01-01T00:00:00ZCollection, imagination and senses: exhibition design as a tool for interpretation of history

Title: La scenografia per l'animazione fra stile e architettura
Authors: Benvenuti, Davide

Animation like painting, illustration, and cinema is constantly inspired by reality. The graphic research combined this with the necessity to involve the viewer often starts from recognizable places.
Animation allows us to overcome the limits of photography; the "real" frequently becomes a simple starting point modified and conceptualized with alterations dictated by the stylistic needs of the story.
These alterations precisely make this subject an exciting field of study.
From photo-realistic to fantastic or strongly abstract architectures, the architectural element helps define the reference scale between character and environment by inserting an element of familiarity.
On the other hand, the representation of reality is often mediated by stylistic considerations. Animation, since its inception, has explored new stylistic languages and techniques: artists like Tyrus Wong, Mary Blair, Eyvind Earle, Gerald Scarfe, Ronald Searle, Ken Anderson, Morice Noble, Hayao Miyazaki, Lorenzo Mattotti, and even Salvador Dali have contributed with unique and different styles to create memorable images.
This chapter discusses the relation between animation and the study of the location. This framework will focus on the graphic research carried out for the film "Summer Tale " that exploits Ronald Searle's illustrative style.2021-01-01T00:00:00ZVenezia e il Peloponneso, 992-1718 : indagini storiche tra territorio, biblioteca e archivio

Authors: Nanetti, Andrea
Abstract: The extraordinary wealth of archival documents, chronicles, travel reports, archaeological sites and monuments, still for the most part to be studied, makes the privileged relationship between Venice and the Peloponnese a key element for the study of Venetian society, with reference to choices made by Venetians in the search for an ethical relationship with the Other in the geopolitical pursuit of their constitutional aim, i.e. far la marchadantia pacifichamente (to trade peacefully). In an almost millenary chronology (992-1718), the Peloponnese – a land on the maritime border between the Ionian and the Aegean Seas, a cultural and commercial link between the Latin-Roman West and the Hellenistic East – is a privileged laboratory for the training of the next generation of interdisciplinary and cross-cultural historians, and for staunch supporters of peace among peoples.2021-01-01T00:00:00Z
