dc.description.abstractThe chemistry of terminal phosphinidene complexes is deep and rich. Despite the synthetic utility of these highly reactive species, their chemistry is still underdeveloped when compared to both organophosphorus compounds and other low-valent species such as carbenes and nitrenes. In this dissertation, we highlight our efforts at advancing the chemistry of low- valent phosphorus by the grafting of new substituents on to phosphorus and by uncovering new activation modes towards these elusive species.en_US
