This paper looks into how music composers’ rights to their work are dependent on the nature of a work as well as its origin and underlying philosophy. Some differences and overlaps between French Droit d’auteur, Anglo-Saxon Copyright and the Copyleft movement will be explored. I will briefly touch on examples from my own compositional practice.
