Abstract: The concept of phase-space representation of transport of intensity phase retrieval is developed, in particular for partially coherent fields. It can be used to interpret the physical meaning of the phase recovered from the TIE, investigate the effect of partially coherent illumination and finite aperture of imaging systems on phase retrieval.
