Abstract: The issue of Summary Annual Report to sharesholders has become a tremedously relevant topic for the accounting and auditing profession in Singapore. This is because a new section was inserted in the Singapore Companies Act to allow companies to issue SARs in lieu of traditional annual reports. The amendment was made to enhanced communication between management and an increasing number of unsophisticated shareholders who have bought their shares using their CPF account balances. We are interested in studying the extent to which companies comply with the Companies Act SAR requirements as well as to document the level of voluntary disclosures present in SARs issued to date. We hope to comment on the effectiveness of SAR as a medium for the communication of financial and non-financial information. Comparisons betweeen equivalent SARs and TARs are also made to confirm that the SAR is essentially a condensed and simplified form of the TAR. Our secondary interest is to examine the SARs issued by selected companies over two consecutive years so as to learn about the development of SAR in Singapore.
