Abstract: The purpose of this project is to study why banks carry out mergers and acquisitions. It examines in detail what benefits banks expect from mergers and acquisitions, the resultant synergies and the hidden pitfalls that exist in bank mergers and acquisitions. This report also reviews the mechanics of valuing a target bank and the buyer’s and seller’s perspectives that must be considered before a merger and acquisition can proceed.
