Abstract: Traffic shaping is used in ATM networks to achieve a desired modification of traffic characteristics. It is part of the set of procedures in ATM traffic management whose primary role is to protect the ATM network and end-systems from congestion in order to achieve network perform objectives. An additional role of traffic management is to promote the efficient use of network resources.
