Abstract: The emergence of 3D sound technology has led to an exciting explosion of new ways to present and create audio environments. The potential ability to project sound images arbitrarily around the listener presents a tremendous leap from the days of stereo sound playback. Unfortunately, the current 3D art is hindered by a few psychophysical limitations. One of the most daunting of these is the problem of non-individualized hearing cues present in typical 3D sound systems. Numerous studies have demonstrated that non-individualized cues almost invariably lead to localization degradation. The popular use of conventional headphones for 3D sound playback poses an additional challenge. The inherent rear perceptual bias and in-head localization of conventional headphones compound the localization confusions arising from non-individualized cues. One solution is individual HRTF measurements but this is a costly and inconvenient alternative.
