Plasma sprayed ceramic coatings under thermal shock loading

Abstract

Plasma sprayed ceramic coatings are used on the compressor, combustion chamber, fuel vaporizers, nozzle guide vane platforms, turbine aerofoil components of aero-engines and in other high-temperature applications. In some instances, the application of transient thermal loads causes cracks to initiate and later propagate resulting in complete failure of the ceramic coatings.
