Abstract: The aim of this research is to explore the effectiveness of the genie based approach as a method of instruction for the teaching of History in a neighbourhood school. The study will heighten an awareness of the genres of History in the students, observe and examine the effects of the genre based approach on their comprehension of History texts and the grades they obtain for assessments during and after a period of intervention. The research was carried out with the assumption that students who are made more aware of History genres and how language is employed to fulfil a purpose, are more able to score better grades for History assessments.
