Abstract: The aims of this research are to ascertain whether Bielaczyc and Colin’s fourteen principles for face-to-face learning communities apply to thriving online communities and consider of new principles can be added to extend Bielaczyc and Collins’s framework for the design of effective learning communities to cover the extra considerations needed for the online environment.
