Abstract: Numerous studies have shown that students have different interpretations of the letters used in algebra. This study was conducted to find the meanings secondary one Normal Technical students in Singapore attach to the letters they see in algebra questions. A class of 35 secondary one Normal Technical students from a Singapore government secondary school took part in the study in which Kiichemann’s algebra test was used in its entirety.
