Abstract: The evacuation preparedness of an individual could be useful during an emergency scenario and their safety perception of their surroundings could help them stay calm during such an event. An experiment and a questionnaire were conducted to evaluate evacuation preparedness and safety perception in individuals. The experiment was in the form of a 3D computer game environment which was created on the Unity game engine to assess an individual’s evacuation preparedness in 4 different scenarios based loosely on an office environment. The questionnaire consisted of an individual’s assessment of their evacuation preparedness, safety perception in different rooms, and knowledge of fire safety symbols. 8 participants were chosen to take part in this experiment. This study investigates the viability of the use of a 3D computer game as a tool of evacuation training and suggests improvements to emergency preparedness education and local fire code in Singapore.
