Abstract: The use of information kiosks in shopping malls is becoming more and more widespread every day. These information kiosks allow for shoppers to quickly search for available shops in a mall and shows them a navigational path to their destination. 2-Dimensional floor plans are typically used due to their ease of creation and their simplicity allows for almost anyone to understand the layout of the mall. However, 3-Dimensional virtual environments can present more information to the user. Through use of detailed models, information such as how the stores look, easily recognizable landmarks and being able to give users a sense of spatial distance, 3-Dimensional virtual environments have the possibility of being much more useful to everyday users. This project explores the use of a 3-Dimensional virtual environment for navigation and its benefits. A 3-Dimensional virtual environment modelled after the SCSE Building’s 1st and 2nd floor will be used for this project. This project will also test a different algorithm and have participants of a survey evaluate its effectiveness in helping users better understand the layout of the virtual environment.
