Abstract: There has been an increasing number of nations moving towards being a “smart cities” by integrating info-communication technology (ICT) and physical devices connected to the IoT network to optimize the efficiency of the nation’s operations and services. This technology allows officials to interact with both the community and the infrastructure to monitor the area to know what is happening. ICT is used to enhance quality, performance and interactivity of urban services to reduce cost and resource consumption. Therefore, it is crucial to monitor the surroundings to protect the environment from the impact due to industrialization from a nation’ continuous development. Existing monitoring network stations are spatially distributed, this hinders the collection of real-time environmental data and yields high power consumption in the sensor nodes. It is important to reduce power consumption in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) to prolong the battery lifespan in the sensor node. In this project, a power-efficient protocol i.e. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is implemented in the design of a WSN infrastructure to reduce power consumption. The setup involves the connection between a BLE sensor and Raspberry Pi acting as a gateway. The sensor data will be transmitted to a gateway and the gateway will transmit the data to a cloud storage.
