Abstract: This dissertation reports an exploratory study on the use of Synectics approach to teaching writing. An intervention programme was designed to teach students to express themselves using Biyu (similes and metaphors). The focus of this study was to find out is students’ writing could be improved in the aspects of creativity, novelty, imagination, expression and grammar if they were coached to use Biyu.
