Abstract: This dissertation aims are to research and achieve understanding of occupancy estimation and tracking in indoor environment. It will use available wireless communications protocols in android smartphone to do indoor localization as everyone will commonly carry smartphone to any places and no high cost involved. Android smartphone have Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), classic Bluetooth, Global Positioning System (GPS) and Wi-Fi function that can use for indoor and outdoor localization. This dissertation objectives are to use classic Bluetooth function in android smartphone to carry out the indoor localization. Firstly, it will be literature review on available wireless communications protocols in android smartphone. Secondly, to understand functionality and concept of classic Bluetooth technology. Thirdly, to establish technique and algorithm to use classic Bluetooth function to do indoor localization and lastly to convert technique and algorithm to programming code using android studio to create custom android application to perform occupancy estimation and tracking in indoor environment. The dissertation main challenging part will be learning android studio to do algorithm programming to create custom android application. It will require to use custom application to control smartphone Bluetooth function to search other nearby Bluetooth devices and retrieve their information. To conclude and achieve the dissertation aims and objectives, final result will be analysis the distance accuracy and trilateration technique using classic Bluetooth for occupancy estimation and tracking in indoor environment.
