In the midst of the turbulent times of modern China, Yen Fu built upon John Stuart Mill’s ideas of liberty, and incorporated it with his understanding of traditional Chinese culture, forming his unique interpretation of liberty. Within Yen Fu’s ideas of liberty, he used western philosophy to criticize the traditional Chinese culture. But at the same time, he also utilized the teachings from the various schools of thought in Chinese philosophy to advocate his ideas of liberty. And through this process, it has brought forth the traditional Chinese culture continuity element hidden under his ideas. The paper will first elaborate on Yen Fu’s ideas of liberty and its unique characteristics. This article also aims to explore the traditional Chinese culture continuity in Yen Fu’s ideas of liberty by first understanding the historical and personal context that has shaped his ideas, and then discussing its significance to modern China.
