Abstract: Radar technology has been widely used around the world for military and security purposes. With the advancement in radar technology over the years, various new radar applications have been implemented. The objective of this project is to explore the possible application of radar technology to measure the instantaneous speed of humans. This will be in the form of instantaneous sprint speed for athletes in the sporting scene and instantaneous walking speed for patients in the rehabilitation setting. In the sporting scene, athletes keep track of their performance and one of the key aspects is their sprint performance. In this report, three common methods of measuring sprint performance are studied, with their pros and cons included. This project aims to explore the application of radar technology to measure instantaneous sprint speed for athletes over a short distance (less than 15m). This will be suitable for tests like the Shuttle Run, where runners will be running 4 x 10m. In the rehabilitation setting, walking speed measurement has many potential benefits. It allows the monitoring of a person’s functional status and their overall health status. In this report, various methods of measuring walking speed are studied, and their pros and cons included. This project also aims to explore the application of radar technology to measure the instantaneous walking speed over a short distance (less than 15m). Overall, this project aims to measure the instantaneous sprint speed and instantaneous walking speed of humans. The experimental set-ups for various scenarios and their results will be included in this report to help the readers understand the advantages and limitations of this radar technology application.
