Abstract: Pillars of Salt is a short film exploring the question of what it means to live with the weight of the past. Luis’ journey through the film is his coming into awareness of the hurt that drives him, and for the first time considering the possibility of living beyond it. Specifically, he has hitherto not grappled with the messy fallout of the dissolution of his parents’ marriage, his father leaving, and the emotional affection that he didn’t get from his mother as a child. Luis re-lives the moments that led him into a relationship with his married supervisor at work, to face the parental absences driving him, and the uncertainties of moving on.
