The birth of the term Xinyao originated from the symposium “Women chang zhe de ge” (loosely translated as The Songs We Sing) held by "Nanyang Xue Sheng", the respective student publication of “Nanyang Siang Pau” on the September 4, 1982. Xinyao, a truncation of “xin jia po nian qing ren zi chuang ge yao”, referred to songs composed by Singapore’s youths, instead of being defined as a certain genre of music today. This paper seeks to explore the birth of Xinyao, and its progression to being a cultural phenomenon amongst Singaporeans in the 1980s. Shiyue participants Ken Chang and Chee Wee Kai played key roles in encouraging teens in the 1980s to compose their own songs, hence developing a link between Shiyue and Xinyao. Based on Qi Yue Liu Huo, a Shiyue event involving several Xinyao participants, this paper will discuss the possible relations between Xinyao and Shiyue and Shiyue’s possible influences on Xinyao.
