Abstract: Power Conversion devices have been around ever since the start of the late 19th Century. The development of Power Conversion Devices has been consistent over the years and numerous different designs and topologies have been proposed and used over the years in the power industries. One of the key developments that has been prominent in research papers was the Multilevel Converter, which made use of gate control switches, such as MOSFETs and IGBTs and software control techniques to produce a lower common mode voltage with lower harmonics distortion. Using the theories and research of various types of multilevel conversion devices, the focus of this Final Year Project mainly aims to direct the research of multilevel converter towards a more versatile and advanced level. Unlike past research, which mainly focuses on only one or two power conversion function, the development of the Universal Multilevel Converter is aimed to perform 3 to 4 different functions of conversions with the use of one single integrated device. This project will serve as a milestone for developing a more compact and economical solution for implementation in a microgrid context. In this report, the key things that will be highlighted mainly consists of 2 main portions which is the software and hardware portion of the overall project. The software function will mainly showcase the steps taken in the simulation process for attaining the desired voltage and current output and the development of the control technique using MATLAB. On the other hand, the hardware portion will highlight the developmental process of the electronics and electrical portion of the converter and the integration process with the control techniques.
