The use of Internet of Things (IoT) has gain popularity with the integration with conventional electronic systems. This enables users to have a control of the hardware without physical contact with the actual system. This is done by using network devices that can connect to the Wifi, which allows the exchange of data through the internet platform. As Singapore progresses to being a smart nation, the use of IoT would be more common in the future, resulting in the development of more smart buildings with better efficient use of the physical devices to monitor and control the building environments. This will aid to make the buildings smarter in terms of enhancing energy efficiency, by collecting data and running different algorithms through the IoT system to minimize energy usage. Office buildings have the highest consumption of energy compared to other build environments, which is mainly contributed by the cooling load of the building. The objective of this project is on the use of chromogenic material as a Smart Window in office building, where the transparency of the window can be regulated to minimize heating in the office attributed to incoming sunlight while ensuring optimal natural lighting condition. The Smart Window is integrated with temperature and lighting sensors, and with different existing building systems such as Air-Conditioning and LED lighting. The objective is to minimize usage of energy in the office building while maintaining a comfortable environment in the office for the occupants. To achieve these objectives, the project will investigate the different types of chromogenic material to be used as a Smart Window and understand the different cooling systems in office buildings. Since windows are the gateway for the exchange of outdoor light to indoor, the use of the chromogenic material should aid to reduce indoor lighting energy consumption, through the supplementary of outdoor light and block excess Lux when needed. Therefore, the Smart Window System presented in this report aims to ensure that the office building is energy efficient through the implementation of different materials for the window and integrating it with the existing building systems into an IoT application. In the hardware aspect of the project, a prototype will be built to test the algorithm to simulate a physical office enclosure incorporated with the chromogenic material Smart Window and the different systems. The prototype comprises the selected chromogenic material, a microprocessor, Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), cooling fan, luminous intensity (Lux), and Temperature (Temp) sensors. Note that as it is challenging to include an Air-Conditioning system in the miniaturized prototype, and hence it is not included in our study. To integrate the different hardware components into the microprocessor, programming with Arduino IDE will be used for the software portion of the project. The use of “Blynk” Application software will be used to incorporate the proposed Smart Window System into an IoT Application, where the readings of the room temperature and light condition, and the automatic and manual control of the smart film, fan and lighting systems can be achieved remotely through an App.en_US
