Abstract: This report presents analytical, numerical, and experimental studies carried out on the performance of a curvilinear scissors mechanism. Studies on curvilinear scissors mechanism is quite limited in the literature. First, an analytical study is taken up and the kinematic equations are derived. A MATLAB code is then developed based on these equations and the kinematic performance of the mechanism is studied using this code. A CAD model is then developed in SolidWorks and the trajectory analysis is carried out. The CAD model is used for the fabrication of a tabletop model of the mechanism. The tabletop model is then used to trace the trajectory physically, where the results showed that curvilinear scissor mechanism has an ellipse-like motion. Clearances in the joints have been found to alter the size of the tabletop model’s trajectory. Further studies should consider including the effects of external loadings and vibrations of the curvilinear scissor mechanism.
