Abstract: This project aims to use the shape memory properties of polymers to manufacture tamperproof Anti-counterfeit Labels (ACLs). These polymers are known to be smart materials as they can display shape memory effects. When exposed to heat, the shape of the ACL should change and thus show that it has been tampered with. This will strengthen its anti-counterfeiting property, preventing counterfeiters from transferring an authentic label onto counterfeit products. This project attempts to refine the manufacturing process of the ACL as well as its mechanical properties allowing it to be more commercially viable. This is done by trying to increase its flexibility and reducing the overall thickness while using commercially available materials. The ACL is then overlayed with a grid pattern to produce an optical distortion. This unique optical distortion will be as an identifier allowing consumers and manufacturers to know that an item is authentic. The details as to the manufacturing process as well as the optical distortion effect will be documented, analyzed, and discussed on how to make the ACL more commercially viable.
