Abstract: The global wastewater treatment capacity of MBR has been constantly growing due to the strong needs in water reuse/cycle and restrictive availability of land. Recent research revealed generation of a variety of halogenated organics during online chemical cleaning of MBR with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) which has been commonly practiced for fouling control and permeability recovery of MBR. These exogenous halogenated organics may likely migrate into natural water bodies and soils through the discharge of MBR permeate, while they tend to bioaccumulate in aquatic food chains (e.g. aquatic animals and plants), leading to a dangerous concentration level for human health. It should be realized that the potent environmental and public health risks associated with produced halogenated organics in MBR permeate have not yet been aware and assessed in consideration of the entire water life cycles. Therefore, this article attempts to express serious concern on, while raising scientific and public awareness on this emerging issue.
