Abstract: Literature plays a big role in providing the West with material to read, absorb and construct China. European interest in the nation-state and Chinese elements rapidly developed during the 18th century, spurred by the extravagant Rococo period. However, the French Revolution soon brought about a reversal of attitude, where derision and hostility replaced earlier enthusiasm for the orient culture. As the meaning of China and its presence continually evolves and fluctuates according to trace underlying connections across historical events. [1st Award]
