Lin Chen was a pioneer in Singapore Chinese Theatre. He was an active director and play writer who enhanced local mandarin theatre with the belief of ‘Serving people’. In his ideology, he strongly believed that the quality of the stage was made up of good script and characters that developed from real-life experiences. For him, drama theatre was an effective way to educate people and reflect the true image of the society. Lin Chen had written down nine one-act plays and three plays of various contents. Among these plays, the subaltern image was one of the biggest features. The characterization of subalterns was vividly shaped and reflected the contemporary social realities. Hence, this thesis would focus on the characterization of subalterns in Lin Chen’s plays from the early 50s to 70s. Apart from the subaltern image, this thesis would also explore the psychological demands and dignity combat of the subalterns under different decades and social contexts.
