Abstract: New materials such as ytterbium doped crystals are the key for developing ultrafast laser technology. The generation of ultrashort pulse is based on the initial evolution of dye lasers followed by mode-locked lasers which leads to the breakthrough of solid state lasers till today’s femtosecond lasers. Doped crystals that produce broad gain bandwidth will be able to generate ultrashort pulses. However at the same time, it is important to produce lasers with high efficiency and ultrashort pulses
